About Our 8x10 Area Rugs
An 8 by 10 rug measures 8 feet wide and 10 feet long. As a large area rug, an 8x10 area rug can help define a space, anchor your room’s design theme, and tie all your decor elements together.
How to Choose an 8x10 Rug
Rug Pile and Texture: For high-traffic areas and low-clearance doors, consider 8x10 rugs in chenille, which are low-pile, lightweight, and feature a smooth texture. For living rooms and bedrooms, consider a higher-pile rug, like a soft 8x10 plush rug. For outdoor spaces and transitional areas, consider a large outdoor rug with a thicker weave and a fade-resistant material.
Rug Color: An 8x10 rug will cover a huge amount of floor space in your room, so it’s important to choose your rug color wisely. Neutral hues, such as white, cream, grey, beige, tan, or taupe, can serve as a nice backdrop for all your furniture pieces and decor elements. Rugs in bolder shades of red, green, blue, orange, yellow, or purple will definitely add character and define the general theme of your space.
Rug Style or Pattern: Aside from the color, the style or pattern of your 8x10 rug can make or break the look of your space. Start with the theme of your room, whether that’s bohemian, modern, traditional, or farmhouse, then look for a rug pattern that will complement your theme. For modern themes, go for a geometric or abstract pattern. For a farmhouse look, opt for a Persian rug with a slightly distressed area. For bohemian or eclectic, go for a pattern with intricate floral details.
Rug Safety: All our 8x10 rugs come in two pieces: a washable Rug Cover and a nonslip Rug Pad made up of two smaller pieces. Our Rug Pad is specifically designed to cling to the Rug Cover and the floor, keeping your rug securely in place.
How to Style Your 8x10 Rug
The idea is to keep all sides equal and the rug centered in the room. As a general rule, remember to keep 8 to 24 inches of visible floor space between the wall and the perimeter of your rug.
In the Living Room: An 8x10 rug works best in an open floor plan, or any room that is at least 3 feet larger than the rug in both length and width. If you have a smaller living area, the best layout leaves at least a 12 to 18-inch border of flooring around your rug. An 8’x10′ area rug can handle a 6 to 7-foot sofa, leaving at least 18 inches of visible rug on either side of the sofa for your side tables. Keep all furniture pieces on top of the rug. If that’s not possible, have just the front legs of your bigger furniture on the rug.
In the Bedroom: An 8x10 rug would be appropriate under a king, queen or full-size bed. The rug would sit almost completely under the bed and nightstands and leave a minimum of 2 feet of soft rug underfoot around the bed. Keep the bottom two-thirds of your bed on the rug and leave at least 12 inches of the rug on all sides.
In the Dining Room: A dining table for 6 would measure a minimum of 5x3 and would fit best on an 8x10 rug. This leaves you 30 inches on all sides for the dining chairs to be moved easily while staying on the rug.
